Asheville Projects
Shiloh School: A Rosenwald School
Researched Shiloh Elementary School, an African American institution in Asheville, NC, established in 1927. This project involved over 80 hours of literature review and interviews with alumni to capture their experiences. I designed a website to share findings and presented the research at the African American in Western North Carolina and Southern Appalachia Conference receiving the Adelaide Daniels Key Community Award.
Mapping Racial Equity Project
Analyzed historical Sanborn fire insurance maps to assess the impact of urban renewal on African American neighborhoods. Utilizing ArcGIS Online, I documented the significant loss of homes and businesses and created a database of past ownership for city-owned parcels acquired through eminent domain. This project aims to visually preserve the historical context of these neighborhoods and highlight their transformations over time.
